Community Buildings

An Empowering Design Practices resource
Community buildings (e.g. community centres, town and village halls, places of worship, children’s centres and youth clubs, libraries, leisure centres) bring people together, offering a range of spaces, activities, and support to local people.

By their nature, community buildings must cater for many different uses and needs, and the design of these buildings will have to respond to many changes over time.

How can you look at a community building with a design lens?

Through ten design themes, we’ll help you to explore and understand the design of community buildings.

You will learn about the power of design to provide innovative solutions and create delightful, welcoming spaces through real-life examples from community spaces across the UK.

Design

Design is all around us. From our kettles to our cathedrals, design solves problems, creates new opportunities, affects our emotions and senses and helps us function. Good design brings the three principles of Form, Function and Feeling together.

Form
The structure of a building, its shape and size, and the materials used to build it, and how different elements have been brought together.

Function
The purpose of the building, how its different spaces are used, at different times and by whom.

Feeling
The qualities of a space, how it affects our emotions and our senses when we’re in it and moving around it.
